James Thomas Leonard

Mr. James Thomas "Jay" Leonard, 78, of 215 Dudley Avenue, Mount Airy, passed away Monday, June 6, 2011, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Mr. Leonard was born June 2, 1933, in Surry County, to the late James Oscar and Maude Blackburn Leonard. He was a veteran of the United States Army and retired from Flowers Baking Company. Jay attended Mount Carmel Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Frances Holder Leonard of the home; three sons and daughters-in-law, Steve and Donna Leonard of Clayton, Eddie and Anne Leonard of Mount Airy, and Mitchell and Kristina Leonard of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren, Ashlie Pait and her husband, Daren, of Franklin, VA, Kayla Streussnig of Boston, MA, and Zachary Leonard, currently serving our country in Afghanistan; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Beulah Norman, Mary Martin, and Roxie and Eddie Collins, all of Mount Airy; and a special family, friend Betty Harrison of Mount Airy. The funeral service will be held Thursday, June 9, 2011, at 11:00 AM at Mount Carmel Baptist Church, with the Rev. Stewart R. Mauck, the Rev. Rusty Reed, and Dr. James Joseph officiating. Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 6000 Fairview Road, Suite 200, Charlotte, NC 28210. The family would like to thank the hospice staff, their friends, and many neighbors for their love and support during Jay's illness.
