James Ralph Loflen

Mr. James Ralph Loflen, 92, of Mount Airy, passed away Sunday night, October 7, 2018, at his home.  Mr. Loflen was born August 24, 1926, in Surry County, the older of two sons born to the late James Emory and Lela Venable Loflen.  James retired from Duke Power Company after 35 years of service.  He was a longtime member of First Baptist Church in Mount Airy and tirelessly served as a cook in the church’s kitchen for 40 years.  James was a charter member of the Mount Airy Rescue Squad and served as captain for many years, and he taught CPR classes for the American Red Cross for 25 years.  Additionally, James was the founding member of Mayberry Squares, a square dancing club, and was the founding member and president of the Blue Ridge Campers Club.  He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Minnie Reeves Loflen of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Yolanda and Michael Howard of Mount Airy; his grandchildren, Andrew and Amy Howard of Lexington, and Chris and Alisha Howard and John David Howard, all of Mount Airy; four great-grandchildren, Madison Howard, Caroline Howard, Luke Howard, and Isabella Howard; and a brother and sister-in-law, Phillip and Dee Loflen of San Diego, CA.  A service of worship and celebration of James’ life will be held Thursday, October 11, 2018, at 2:00 PM at First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jay Meadows officiating.  Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens.  The family will receive friends Thursday from 12:30 until 2:00 PM in the Fireside Room at First Baptist Church.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church Kitchen Fund, 714 North Main Street, Mount Airy, NC  27030.  Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
