James Robert Miller

Mr. James Robert “Jim” Miller, 92, of Mount Airy, passed away Tuesday afternoon, January 15, 2019, at his home.  Mr. Miller was born January 11, 1927, in Surry County, the younger of two children born to the late James Emmett and Stella Faye Blackburn Miller.  Jim proudly served with the 304th Signal Operations Battalion, 8th Army Headquarters, in Yokohama, Japan, during World War II.  He owned and operated Miller Construction Company for many years and was a faithful member of Grace Moravian Church.  He is survived by a daughter, Mary Anna Arnold of Mount Airy; a son and daughter-in-law, James David and Cindy Lawson Miller of Mount Airy; two grandsons and their wives, Robert and Amy Arnold of Stokesdale and Daniel and Priscilla Arnold of Mooresville; and three great-grandchildren, Jacob Arnold, Alan Arnold, and Cori Arnold.  In addition to his parents, Mr. Miller was preceded in death by his wife, Erline King Miller; and a sister, Hazel Miller Chauncey.  The funeral service will be held Friday, January 18, 2019, at 2:00 PM at Grace Moravian Church, with the Rev. Dr. Neil Routh officiating.  Burial will follow in God’s Acre.  The family will receive friends Friday from 1:00 until 2:00 PM in the sanctuary at Grace Moravian Church.  The family wishes to express their gratitude for the love and compassion shown by his caregivers, Shannon and Harriett, and the staff at Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, especially Angel.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Grace Moravian Church, 1401 North Main Street, Mount Airy, NC  27030; or Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC  27030.
