Mr. James Thomas “J.T.” Palmer, 92, of Mount Airy, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 9, 2020. Mr. Palmer was born June 9, 1928, in Surry County, one of four children born to the late Vester and Irene Collins Palmer. J.T. served our country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He retired as an executive vice president from North Carolina Granite Corporation after more than 47 years of service, and he was a member of Grace Moravian Church. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and John Smoot of Burlington; a granddaughter, Elizabeth Smoot of Greensboro; a sister, JoAnn Palmer Simpson Hughes of Pfafftown; a brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Nancy Palmer of Pilot Mountain; a niece, Gloria Simpson Willis; and three nephews, Mark Palmer, Greg Simpson, and Tim Palmer. In addition to his parents, Mr. Palmer was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Joyce Palmer; a sister, Kathy Palmer Walker; and a godson and nephew, Michael Palmer. A service of worship and celebration of J.T.’s life will be held Saturday, December 12, 2020, at 11:00 AM at God’s Acre, with the Rev. Dr. Neil Routh officiating. No formal visitation will be held. Due to public health concerns, attendees are requested to wear a face mask and practice social distancing. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Grace Moravian Church, 1401 North Main Street, Mount Airy, NC 27030. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
