James Daniel Rakes

Mr. James Daniel Rakes, 66, of 377 Mainline Road, Cana, VA, passed away Saturday morning, September 27, 2008, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. Mr. Rakes was born March 9, 1942, in Surry County, to the late James Junior and Bernice Loretta Sutphin Rakes. He served in the United States Army and retired from North Carolina Granite Corporation. He was of the Baptist faith. Surviving are his wife, Anna Ruth Tilley Rakes of the home; three daughters and sons-in-law, Theresa and Jason Semones, Tammy and Lewis Bode, Anna Marie and Bryan Thomas, all of Cana, VA; four grandchildren, Tamela Key, Dakota Semones, Matthew Thomas, and Lora Bode; and two brothers and sisters-in-law, Dean and Dale Rakes of Mount Airy and Dale and Freda Rakes of Siloam. In addition to his parents, Mr. Rakes was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Rakes. A graveside service will be held Monday, September 29, 2008, at 3:30 PM at Edwards Family Cemetery, with the Rev. Kelly Haynes. Full military rites will be conducted during the service by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Sunday from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy.
