James Leon Slate

Mr. James Leon Slate, 67, of Mt. Airy passed away on Thursday, January 26, 2017 at Forsyth Medical Center after a brief illness. He was born in Surry County on March 9, 1949 to Margaret Mae Sechrist Slate and the late Ralph Lewis Slate. Mr. Slate was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather. He was a one of a kind super human being with a heart of gold and a great friend to everyone. He retired as general manager from Mt. Airy Oil Company after 32 years of service, yet continued to go by and visit every day. Left to cherish his memory is his devoted wife of almost 50 years, Connie Sue Boyles Slate; his daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Bradley Radford; two grandchildren, Christopher Radford and wife, Chrisie, and Jamie Radford and girlfriend, Makayla Martin; great-grandchildren, Ellie King, Jayden Radford and Kenzie Radford; a sister and brother-in-law, Jewel and Horace Bondurant; mother-in-law, Ruth Allred; a special niece, Amy Leech and an “adopted daughter”, Kathy Alderman; he also had several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, January 29, 2017 at the Pedigo Family Cemetery in Ararat, VA with Rev. Darren Slate and Rev. Ed Hartman officiating. The family will receive friends at the home from 4:00 until 6:00 PM Saturday. There will be no formal visitation at the funeral home. Moody Funeral Home in Mt. Airy will be assisting the Slate Family.
