Mr. James "Herman" Smith, 84, of 220 Belton Road, Mount Airy, passed away Saturday, January 29, 2011, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. He was born November 27, 1926, in Surry County, to the late Grover Cleveland and Emma Parker Smith. He retired from Ed Owens Chrysler Plymouth and was a member of Flat Rock Baptist Church. Mr. Smith served our country in the United States Navy during World War II. Mr. Smith is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, James "Tex" and Hazel Smith of Mount Airy and Terry L. Smith of Kernersville; two grandchildren, Krista Allyson Smith and James Zachary Smith, both of Mount Airy; and two sisters and a brother-in-law, Virginia Beck of Pilot Mountain, Sophia Hawks and Tina and Maynard Easter both of Mt. Airy. In addition to his parents, Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Verona Lowry Smith; two brothers, Persey Harold Smith and Robert Eugene Smith; four sisters, Edith Ward, Kathleen Welborn, Lou Ellen Midkiff, and Treva Cockerham. A memorial service will be held at 7:00 PM Wednesday, February 2, 2011, at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Todd E. Byrd officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6:00 PM until the time of the service at the funeral home.
