Mr. James Elbert Smith, 83, of Siloam, passed away Sunday morning, October 31, 2010, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. He was born November 7, 1926, in Surry County, to the late Roy D. and Daisy Bowman Smith. He was a farmer and a lifelong member and former deacon of Siloam Baptist Church. He was an active board member of the Surry County Farm Bureau and a member of the Copeland Masonic Lodge #390 AF and AM. Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Ethel Hill Smith of the home; a daughter, Linda Mendenhall of Siloam; a son and daughter-in-law, David and Pam Smith of Siloam; four grandchildren, Heather Smith, Haley Smith, Hunter Smith, and Ashley Mendenhall; two sisters, Bonnie Bennett and Jackie Wall, both of Siloam; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Clifton and Dorothy Smith of Dobson, Bobby and Callie Smith of Siloam, Gladys Smith of Shingletown, CA, Phoebe Coone of Pilot Mountain, and Geneva and John Wright of Greensboro. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Fred Smith and Ray Smith; and two infant brothers. The funeral service will be held Wednesday, November 3, 2010, at 2:00 PM at Siloam Baptist Church, with the Rev. Bill Faw and the Rev. Jim Dockery officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Moody-Davis Funeral Home in Dobson, where his body will remain until carried to the church to lie-in-state 30 minutes prior to the funeral service. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to the Siloam Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 25 Siloam, NC 27047 or the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home, 945 Zephyr Road, Dobson, NC 27017.
