Mr. James Wesley Whitt, 73, widower of Dorothy Mae Venable Whitt, of Mount Airy, passed away at his home on Saturday, August 14, 2010, surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Whitt was born December 20, 1936, in Surry County, to the late David Columbus and Avvie Marion Whitt. He was a lifelong farmer who dedicated himself to God and his family. Left to cherish his memory are his children, Linda and husband Don McMillian of Cana, VA, Janet Casey of Black Mountain, and Edward and wife Beth Whitt of Mount Airy; six grandchildren, Tina Crouse, Kevin Sawyers, Misty and husband Neil Christopher, Mandy Jenkins and husband Wendell, Jamye Whitt, and Taylor Zehner; seven great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Ann Key of Mount Airy; and a brother-in-law, Dean Browder of Mount Airy; and a special friend and caregiver, Tommy Harper of Mount Airy. His funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 pm Tuesday, August 17, 2010, at New Bethel Baptist Church, located on Pipers Gap Road in Mount Airy, by the Rev. Doug Cochran. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday from 7:00 to 9:00 pm at the church, where his body will remain until the funeral service. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030. The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care and Tommy Harper for their loving, compassionate care. Moody-Davis Funeral Home is serving the Whitt family.
