Mr. James Luther York, 78, of 636 Hamburg Street, Mount Airy, passed away Thursday, August 28, 2008, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mr. York was born December 2, 1929, in Surry County, to the late Felix and Rosie Johnson York. James joined the United States Air Force during his younger years, and was later drafted into the United States Army to serve in the Korean Conflict. He was a stone cutter at North Carolina Granite Corporation for many years and a member of Antioch Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Elaine Wendt York of the home; stepchildren, Debbie and Nick Jarrell of Mount Airy and Ray and Billie Hutchens of Westfield; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Annie McBride of Mount Airy; a special nephew and his wife, Herald and Maudine York of Mount Airy; and a special pet, Rascal. In addition to his parents, Mr. York was preceded in death by a stepson, Steve Moser; three sisters, Eunice Edwards, Lucille Corn, and Ethel Mae York; and a brother, Randall York. The funeral service will be held Saturday, August 30, 2008, at 11:00 AM at Antioch Baptist Church. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Dale Wallace and the Rev. David Gantt, and burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, where his body will remain until carried to the church to lie-in-state 30 minutes before the funeral service. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions can be made to the Antioch Baptist Church, 137 Antioch Avenue, Mount Airy, NC 27030. The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Douglas Stewart, Dr. Nelson Gardner, the staff of Mount Airy Dialysis Center, and the 8th floor staff-renal department at Forsyth Medical Center for the love, care, and compassion shown to James during his illness.
