Jerry Glenn Nester

Mr. Jerry Glenn Nester, of 1605 East Wensley Drive, Mount Airy, passed away Tuesday morning, August 11, 2009, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem after an extended illness. Mr. Nester was born July 1, 1937, in Surry County, son of the late Dexter Marion and Eleanor Simmons Nester. He was a veteran of the United States Army and retired from First Union National Bank after 36 years of service. Jerry had a very caring spirit for his family, church, and community. He was a former member of the Mount Airy Chamber of Commerce; a former member of the Mount Airy City Schools Board of Education; a faithful volunteer of the Northern Hospital of Surry County Auxiliary; a member of the Mount Airy Kiwanis Club; a past treasurer of the Surry County Chapter of the American Red Cross; and was a recipient of the Mount Airy Jaycees' Distinguished Service Award in 1972. Mr. Nester was a dedicated member of Mount Ararat Pentecostal Holiness Church in Ararat, VA, where he served as secretary/treasurer and a Sunday school superintendent for many years. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Shirlene "Shirley" King Nester of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Melanie and John Arnall of Kernersville; a son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Retha Nester of Roanoke Rapids; five grandchildren, Justin Arnall, Megan Arnall, and Kristen Arnall, all of Kernersville, and Janae Nester and Jared Nester, both of Roanoke Rapids; a brother and sister-in-law, Eddie and Sandy Nester of Mount Airy; a half-brother and his wife, Wayne and Jackie Nester of Westfield; a brother-in-law, Don Moler of Myrtle Beach, SC; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Nester was preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, Sarah and Joe Bill Anderson; and a half-sister, June Nester Moler. The funeral service will be held Thursday, August 13, 2009, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Rickey Rogers and the Rev. Harold Parker officiating. Burial will follow in the Oakdale Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Mount Ararat Pentecostal Holiness Church, c/o Debbie Cox, 1106 Dry Pond Highway, Claudville, VA 24076.
