Mr. Jerry Wayne “Papa” Stone, 67, of Mount Airy, went to be with his heavenly Father on Wednesday night, December 23, 2015. Mr. Stone was born June 13, 1948, in Surry County, to the late Harvey Madison and Della Lois Inman Stone. Jerry retired as a salesman from Mount Airy Equipment Company. He was a member of Bannertown Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, choir member, Sunday school teacher, and served on other committees. He was a past member of the Mount Airy Lions Club and had served in the United States Army Reserves. Mr. Stone was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, as well as a friend and neighbor to all who knew him. Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Carol Hiatt Stone of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Amanda and Mike Phillips and Emily and Mike Hawks, all of Mount Airy; nine grandchildren and a spouse, Keevie and Alex Wilmoth, Klay Newsome, Katey Newsome, Sterling Phillips, Maddison Hawks, Morgan Hawks, Maggie Hawks, and Mason Hawks, all of Mount Airy, and Dakota Phillips, United States Air Force, of Anchorage, AL; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Judy and Junior Stephens and Sue and Boyce Jessup, all of Pilot Mountain; his father-in-law, Russell Hiatt of Mount Airy; and a brother-in-law, Billy Hiatt of Mount Airy. In addition to his parents, Mr. Stone was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Addie S. Hiatt; and a sister-in-law, JoAnne Hiatt. The funeral service will be held Sunday, December 27, 2015, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy. The service will be conducted by Mr. Kenneth Hollingsworth and the Rev. Mickey Cogdill. Burial will follow in the Shelton Church of the Brethren Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at the funeral home. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to the Bannertown Baptist Church Building Fund, 1834 Westfield Road, Mount Airy, NC 27030; or Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030. The family would like to express a “special thanks” to the staff at Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care for the care given to Mr. Stone during his illness.
