Mr. Jimmy Franklin Barker, 70, of 123 Hassell Lane, Pilot Mountain, passed away Monday, November 2, 2009, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Salisbury. Mr. Barker was born October 2, 1939, in Surry County, to the late Lonnie Joe and Gladys Jones Barker. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force and was of the Baptist faith. Mr. Barker was a member of the Mount Airy Lions Club. Surviving are his wife, Faye Jean Hemmings Barker of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Donna Lynn and Jeff Flippen of Pilot Mountain; a son, Anthony "Tony" Ray Barker of the home; four grandchildren and a spouse, Maria Nichole and Josh Watson of Mount Airy, Sarah Elizabeth Johnson and Jacob Cody Flippen, both of Pilot Mountain, and Courtney Renee Barker of Dobson; two great-grandchildren, Rylan Watson of Mount Airy and Tristian Williams of Dobson; a brother, Tommy Barker of Mount Airy; a sister-in-law, Treva Barker of Winston-Salem; two nieces, Sonya Barker and Robin Barker, both of Winston-Salem; and a nephew, Todd Barker of Winston-Salem. In addition to his parents, Mr. Barker was preceded in death by a brother, Carl "Pete" Barker; and a sister-in-law, Mary Ruth Barker. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, November 4, 2009, at Skyline Memory Gardens, with the Rev. Terry Freeman and the Rev. Kenneth Young officiating. Full military rites will be conducted at the graveside by Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 10:00 AM until the time to carry Mr. Barker to the cemetery for graveside service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 6000 Fairview Road, Suite 200, Charlotte, NC 28210, or to the American Lung Association of North Carolina, P.O. Box 27985, Raleigh, NC 27611.
