Joe Galyean

Joe Donald Galyean, 77, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, February 22, 2021 with his family by his side.  Joe was born February 23, 1943 in Surry County, the youngest of five children to the late Otis Arthur and Lilla Parker Galyean.  Joe was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He is survived by his wife of more than 58 years, Virginia Carlene of the home, son Donald Keith (Vicki) of Clemmons, NC, grandson Joseph Keith  (Austina) of Advance, NC and great-granddaughter Lora Lee.  Joe was predeceased by sisters Connie Mae Payne, Louise Munoz and brothers Arlis Galyean and Elmo Galyean.  He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.  Joe worked for over 40 years at Proctor-Silex Corporation in Mt. Airy. After Proctor closed, Joe attended and graduated from Surry Community College.  Joe was a past member of the Mt. Airy Jaycees and Toastmasters. He was ordained as a deacon at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church and was a member at Flippin Memorial Baptist Church at the time of his death.  During his junior and senior years of high school, Joe was a student bus driver.  He returned to driving a bus during his retirement and drove for almost 11 years for Mt. Airy City and Surry County Schools. He loved the students on his bus routes and they loved him.  He had only recently retired prior to his illness.  Joe loved his Lord, his church and his family.  He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.  The family wishes to thank the nurses, doctors and staff of the emergency room and ICU at Northern Hospital of Surry County who cared for Joe in his final days.  Visitation will be Friday, February 26, 2021 from 10:30 until 11:30 AM at Moody’s Funeral Home, Mt. Airy followed by a graveside service at Skyline Memory Gardens, officiated by Rev. Tim Burton.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Gideon’s.  Online condolences may be made at www.moodyfuneralservices.com.
