Mr. Joe Bland Hawkins, 71, of Elkin, passed away peacefully at the home of his daughter on Wednesday, April 20, 2011. He was born June 17, 1939, in Wilkes County, to the late Bland Burette and Mary Jane Royal Hawkins. He was a veteran of the United States Navy. He leaves to cherish his memory a daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia Hawkins Bryant and John of Elkin; a son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Emily Hawkins of Elkin; four beloved grandchildren, Christopher Royal and his fiancée, Hannah Cheek, Johnathan Brown and his fiancée, Katie Norman, Amy Hawkins, and Bethany Hawkins, all of Elkin; a special great-granddaughter, Cheyene Royal; a brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Ruby Hawkins of Thurmond; a nephew and his wife, Brian and Melanie Hawkins of Thurmond; and the mother of his children, Ellen Hawkins of Elkin. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hawkins was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter, Amber Nicole Royal. There will be a memorial service on Saturday, April 23, 2011, at 2:00 PM at Gid Branch Baptist Church. The family will receive friends at the church following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 688 North Bridge Street Elkin, NC 28621. The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, especially Kathy Martin and Anita Abbey, for their loving, compassionate care given them during this difficult time.
