Joseph Bennett Maye, 82, of 165 Virginia Street, Mount Airy, passed away Tuesday, December 2, 2008, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. He was born December 23, 1915, in Drexel, to the late Tom and Estelle Maye. He was educated in the Drexel High School, Gardner-Webb College, Lenoir-Rhyne College, Duke University, and Radford College. He was a psychology professor at Surry Community College, where he taught many, many years. Prior to that, he was the minister of Flat Rock Baptist Church and First Baptist Church in Hillsville, VA. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth "Libby" H. Maye of the home; a son and daughter-in law, James Bennett and Debbie of Charlotte; a brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Linda Maye of Morganton; and a special brother-in-law, Bob Hicks of Winston-Salem. The funeral service will be held Friday, December 5, 2008, at 11:00 AM at Flat Rock Baptist Church, with the Rev. Todd E. Byrd officiating. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery. There will be an opportunity for friends to come by Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy anytime Thursday to pay their respects. In lieu of flowers, Joe requested that memorials be made to the Joseph Bennett Maye Scholarship Fund, c/o Surry Community College Foundation, 630 South Main Street, Dobson, NC 27017, of which he loved dearly, or to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030, who was wonderful in their care extended to Joe during his illness. The family would also like to express a special thanks to Dr. Jan Kriska and Dr. Yasir Chemma for their care shown to Joe.
