Joe Banner Sutphin

Mr. Joe Banner Sutphin, 88, of Mt. Airy passed away Thursday, October 18, 2018 at Surry Community Health and Rehabilitation.  Mr. Sutphin was born in Surry County on March 31, 1930 to the late Clarence and Eva Hicks Sutphin.  Mr. Sutphin proudly served our country in the United States Army for 22 years.  He is survived by special nieces, Deborah Craddock and Gayleen Hall; brother-in-law, Leroy Johnson; a special friend and caretaker, James Blizzard; nieces and nephews, Phil Hall and family, Terry Hall and Kim, Gary Johnson and family, Ricky Johnson and family, Melissa Bobbitt and family, Janie Rippey and family, Diane Turney and family, Frankie Vaughn and family, and Kenneth Norman and family; and several cousins.  In addition to his parents, Mr. Suthpin was preceded in death by his sisters, Kathleen Sutphin, Polly Hall, Marie Norman, and Mary Johnson.  A memorial graveside service will be held Monday, October 22, 2018 at 11:00 at Midkiff Family Cemetery with Arlis Thomas officiating.  Military honors will be provided by VFW Memorial Honor Guard, Pilot Mtn. Post 9436 and Mt. Airy Post 2019.  There will be no formal visitation.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Midkiff Family Cemetery, c/o Steve Loftis, P.O. Box 1526, Mount Airy, NC 27030. Moody Funeral Service in Mount Airy is serving the Sutphin family.
