Mr. Joe I. Young, 81, of Artesia, NM, passed away Tuesday, March 17, 2009, at Alleghany Rehabilitation Center in Sparta, a former resident of Golden Living Center in Mount Airy. Mr. Young was born March 30, 1927, in Dekalb, TX, to the late James Harvey and Amanda Pearl Welch Young. He served in the United States Army during World War II and worked as a driller on an oil rig for more than 30 years. Mr. Young is survived by his wife, Catherine Eileen Sinclair Young of Artesia, NM; two daughters and a son-in-law, Jolene Elsesser of Corvallis, MT, and Linda and David Brown of Mount Airy; a son, Richard Carter of Alamogordo, NM; six grandchildren, Amy Gravely and husband, Andy, Melissa Brown, and Eric Brown, all of Mount Airy, Rhonda Carter of Carlsbad, NM, Crystal Carter of Hope, NM, and Michael Carter of Alamogordo, NM; ten great-grandchildren; a sister, Hazel West of Artesia, NM; and a nephew and his wife, Bobby and Suzanne West of Artesia, NM. In addition to his parents, Mr. Young was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters. The family will receive friends Friday, March 20, 2009, from 10:00 AM until noon at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy. The family will have a private graveside service at a later time at Skyline Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to Hospice and Palliative Care Center, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
