John Woltz Comer, Jr

Retired US Air Force Major John Woltz Comer, Jr., 79, of Dobson, died December 5, 2008. Born November 14, 1929, he was the son of the late John Woltz and Ruth Gibson Comer. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Lieselotte R. (Lilo) Kortzeborn Comer; a daughter, Katherine Ruth Comer; a brother, Robert F. Comer and wife Vonda Comer; a brother-in-law, Herbert Kortzeborn of Trier, Germany; three aunts; two nieces; one nephew; and several cousins. John was a graduate of Dobson High School and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a degree in business administration in 1954. He was a member of Delta Sigma Pi. In 1955, he entered the Air Force as a second lieutenant. He later was awarded a master degree from Ball State University. His specialties were reconnaissance intelligence and supply. He received several Air Force commendation medals and was named outstanding supply officer at US Air Force bases in Kenchilo, MI; Wiesbaden, Germany; and Osan, Korea. Serving at Clark Air Force Base in the Philippines during the Vietnam War, he was responsible for delivering supplies to units in-country. After retiring from the Air Force, he was owner of radio station WYZD Dobson. John was a dedicated American patriot and an avid reader, gardener, fisherman, master bridge player and true blue Tar Heel fan. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, December 8, at Dobson United Methodist Church where he was a lifelong member. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall at 1:00 PM for one hour before the service. Burial will be in Dobson Cemetery with full military honors provided by Military Honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Honor Guard Mount Airy Post 2019 and Pilot Mountain Post 9436. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Association, Western Carolina Chapter, 3800 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC 28215-3220.
