John David Haynes

Mr. John David Haynes, known by many as “Coach John,” of Mount Airy, passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning, December 13, 2023, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson.  He was 88 years old.  Mr. Haynes was born June 8, 1935, in Surry County, one of three children born to the late Raymond Theodore and Hallie Atkins Haynes.  Coach John grew up in Elkin and graduated from Elkin High School in 1953.  Following high school, he earned his bachelor's degree from Guilford College.  He touched many young lives as a teacher, coach, and principal in Surry County Schools.  He retired as principal of Lowgap Elementary School in 1993, after 33 years of dedicated service in the school system.  John was a longtime and faithful member of Mount Airy Friends Meeting, serving as a Sunday school teacher for many years.  He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Louise Luther Haynes; two sons and daughters-in-law, Christopher Keith Haynes and Angela Scofield and John David Haynes, Jr. and Elizabeth Kelk; three grandchildren, Emily Haynes, Ryan Toole, and Braeden Haynes; a great-grandchild, Landon Haynes; and a sister, Jerri Hemric.  In addition to his parents, Mr. Haynes was preceded in death by a brother, Larry Haynes.  A graveside service will be held Saturday, December 16, 2023, at 2:00 PM at Crestwood Memorial Gardens (914 US 21, State Road), with Dr. Jon Cawley officiating.  No formal visitation will be held.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Surry County Schools Educational Foundation, 209 North Crutchfield Street, Dobson, NC  27017; or the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home, 945 Zephyr Road, Dobson, NC  27017.  Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
