John Jonas completed his life's journey at his Meadows of Dan home on November 21, 2011. John was born in Budapest, Hungary in 1914. As a passionate young scholar, he embraced the field of science and earned his PhD in Chemistry in 1937. During the chaotic years of WWII, John, as a young husband and father, narrowly survived the perils of military service on the Russian front. Shortly after returning to Hungary - he was faced with the decision to flee from the imminent Soviet Communist invasion of his homeland. While living in refugee status in Germany after the War, John managed to rekindle his profession as a research scientist. In 1951, John with his wife Edith and two oldest sons immigrated to the United States -- where he was able to further his scientific career in developing new food technologies.
Upon retirement in 1977, John and Edith found their way to the Mountaintop where they established their final home. During his retirement years, John took great pride in his community involvements that included his participation in helping to establish the Tri-Area Clinic at Laurel Fork in the early 1980's. The diversity of his intellectual interests is reflected in the rich collection of his personal memoirs. Having lost his beloved wife Edith earlier this year, John is survived by his three sons, Steven, George and Peter; grandson Steven John; and three daughters-in-law, Connie, Patti, and Kathleen.
The family is planning a Memorial Open House in the near future. For anyone wishing to pay respects to the memory of John and Edith, please contact the family for details at the Jonas residence in Meadows of Dan. Online condolences may be sent by visiting www.moodyfuneralservices.com.
