John Lee Mittman

Mr. John Lee Mittman, 76, made his transition to eternal life on Sunday, April 29, 2007, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mr. Mittman resided at 421 Nelson Hill Road off Linville Road in Mount Airy. He was the husband of the late Annie Mae Mittman. Mr. Mittman was born March 18, 1931, in Surry County, to the late Clint and Mollie Vaughn Mittman. He was the owner-operator of Mittman's Paint and Body Shop in Mount Airy and was a member of the Mallalieu Jones United Methodist Church in the city. Mr. Mittman attended the "Old" J.J. Jones School and prior to completion he was enlisted in the United States Army and served during the Korean War. As a public servant, Mr. Mittman served on the Mount Airy Rescue Squad, the Mount Airy City Planning Board, and a trustee of Mallalieu Jones United Methodist Church. Mr. Mittman was an avid traveler and was well known for his love of old-fashioned cars. Mr. Mittman enjoyed finding classic automobiles, fixing them up, and showcasing them outside of his body shop. In later years, Mr. Mittman took pride in researching his family history and attempting to capture "pieces of history" of Surry County through stories told, memories, and documented records. Everyone throughout the state of North Carolina and Virginia knew that if they had a car accident they could call "John" to fix their car and fix it right. Mr. Mittman is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Amy and Al White of Clemmons and Gloria and Linwood McNeill of Garner. His loving grandchildren are Alfred Mittman White, Amanda White, Nikki McNeill and Adrianne McNeill. Mr. Mittman's brothers and sisters-in-law are Bobby Gray and Barbara Mittman of Mount Airy, Jimmy and Judy Mittman of Greensboro, Mrs. Alzona Mittman of Mount Airy (Clint) and Mrs. Eva Mittman (Claude) of Mount Airy. In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Mittman was preceded in death by sisters, Lucille Mittman and Pamona Hatcher, and brothers, Claude Mittman, Clint Mittman, and Ben Mittman. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends. Cecil Thompson and the Rev. Benjamin Mittman, Jr. The burial will follow in the Oakdale Cemetery in Mount Airy with graveside rites for Mr. Mittman conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Honor Guard Mount Airy Post 2019 and Pilot Mountain Post 9436. The Mittman family recognizes the loving care extended to "John" by his dear companion, Dionne Dodd of Mount Airy.
