John William Moore

John Wiliam Moore passed away peacefully on March 19, 2025 at his home surrounded by his loving wife and daughter. John was born November 16, 1946 in Lafayette, Indiana. His family relocated to Genoa, Illinois where he grew up.  John graduated from Genoa Kingston, High School. He played basketball while in high school.

On January 8, 1968 he was inducted into the Army and served two years. One of those years he was stationed at Bien Hoa, Vietnam. After returning to the United States he served out his remaining Army duty at Fort Gordon, Georgia, and was honorably discharged on January 7, 1970.

Upon his discharge he returned to college at Northern Illinois University. He graduated from Northern with a degree in industrial engineering, and he was employed by Tuttle Electric. Eventually Tuttle Electric moved to Wytheville, VA where he and his wife relocated. After a while in Wytheville, he sought another job, and was hired by Proctor Silex of Mount Airy, NC. After Proctor Silex moved to Mexico, he went back to school to get his licenses to be a financial adviser which he did for 20 years at the then Surrey Bank.

John was president of the foundation of Reeves Community Center and a long time member of the Mount Airy Youth Foundation. He played soccer on a men’s team when first coming to Mount Airy. He also refereed soccer for 30+ years with the highlight being able to referee at a 2012 High School State Soccer Championship game. Even as a referee, he always tried to educate and coach the players on the finer points of soccer.

John was preceded in death by his parents William Moore and Elizabeth Halsema Moore of Genoa, IL, and his brother Ron Moore. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Roxann Schuessler Moore, son Geoff Moore and wife, Maggie Moore and their children, Christopher Moore and Natalie Moore of Terrell, NC, son in law, Simon Kelly and daughter Kristin Moore Kelly, his primary caregiver, and their son, Scott Kelly of the home. His brother Tom Moore and wife, Candy plus their children Mark, Anne and Tod and their children of St. Charles, IL and sister, Barb Moore of Dover, PA.
