John Henry O'Neal

Mr. John Henry O'Neal, 82, of Mount Airy, passed away Tuesday, June 23, 2009, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mr. O'Neal was born September 5, 1926, in Surry County, to L.F. "Fate" and Sallie Atkins O'Neal. He served our country in the United States Navy during World War II and was retired from Surry County SchoolS. Mr. O'Neal was a member of Northside Baptist Church. Surviving are his devoted wife, Evelyn Strickland Campbell O'Neal of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Christy O'Neal of Mount Airy; a grandson and his wife, Gregory Ross and Amanda O'Neal of Cottonwood, AL; a great-granddaughter, Rachel Elizabeth O'Neal; a sister, Vada Carlyle of Winston-Salem; and a brother and sister-in-law, Bobby and Ann O'Neal of Winston-Salem. In addition to his parents, Mr. O'Neal was preceded in death by his first wife, Lillian Freeman O'Neal; a grandson, John Lafayette O'Neal; two sisters, Ruby O. Foster and Eva O. Fulk; and a half-brother, Curlie O'Neal. The funeral service will be held Saturday, June 27, 2009, at 11:00 AM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Keith Love officiating. Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens, with military honors by VFW Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Friday night from 6:00 to 8:00 at the funeral home. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
