Mr. John Quincy Shelton, III, 67, of Mount Airy, passed away Sunday, January 17, 2021, at his home. Mr. Shelton was born December 9, 1953, in Surry County, the son of the late John Quincy Shelton, Jr. and Jacqueline Vogler Shelton. John began his career as a paramedic in 1977. In 1985, he was named the director of Surry County Emergency Medical Services. He was accredited with 140 life saves during his years of service. Under his leadership, Surry County Emergency Medical Services was recognized as the standard for how emergency medical services should operate. He is survived by his wife, Andrea Thomas Shelton; a son, John Quincy Shelton, IV and his wife, Meghan, and their children, Connor, Emma, and Finley; a son, James Myron Shelton and his wife, Jaime, and their children, Noah and Vann; a stepson, Bradley Thomas; an adopted daughter, Alexus Timmons; a sister, Lynda Shelton Terry and her husband, Dan, and their son, Jason Wood; a special uncle, Frank Shelton; and a host of friends throughout the community and state, too numerous to mention. In addition to his parents, Mr. Shelton was preceded in death by three brothers, Kelly Dean Shelton, David Keith Shelton, and Tony Dale Shelton; and a special niece, Kelley Dayle Wood. Due to the current COVID pandemic, a private family service will be held. A service of celebration will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the John Quincy Shelton, III Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Surry Community College Foundation, 630 South Main Street, Dobson, NC 27017. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
