John Springthorpe, Jr.

 Mr. John Springthorpe, Jr., 90, of Mount Airy, passed away Saturday, October 7, 2023, at the Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson, NC. John was born January 7, 1933, in Surry County. He graduated from Mount Airy High School in 1951 and graduated from North Carolina State University in 1955. He married Roberta Glenn Ashburn in 1953. John is survived by his children, John Springthorpe, III and his wife Karen; Bruce Springthorpe and his wife Tammy; Celeste Tsaklis and her husband John; Dwight Springthorpe and his wife Tami. John has 10 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, 2 step grandchildren, and 3 step great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Sarah Denmark of Cookeville, TN. For 45 years, John enjoyed the profession of salesman for Dixie Container Corporation of Morganton, NC. He traveled by car 50,000 miles a year calling on his friends and he never met a stranger. John was a good provider to his family and a faithful steward of God’s house at Trinity Episcopal Church. In retirement, he helped grow The Shepherd’s House where he was famous as “the man in the red hat” selling tickets at the annual fund raiser. John was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Roberta Glenn Springthorpe, and his parents, John Springthorpe, Sr., and Pansy Violet Jackson Springthorpe and one grandchild, Michael Holden. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, October 10, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church in Mount Airy, with the Reverend Sarah Carper Morris officiating. Interment will follow at Oakdale Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home of Mount Airy, NC.
