John Leon Worth

Mr. John Leon Worth, 79, of 1037 Spring Street, Mount Airy, husband of Velna Reynolds Worth, passed away Saturday, April 25, 2009, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. He was born June 21, 1929, in Surry County, to the late Robert Claude and Alma Ingram Harris Worth. He was the owner and operator of Worth Honda Kawasaki in Mount Airy. Mr. Worth was an avid supporter and fan of youth sports throughout Surry County, especially the game of baseball, and throughout his life his happiest moments were spent bringing joy to the lives of all those who knew and loved him as their papa. He was a member of Mount Airy Friends Meeting, having served on the Ministry Council and the finance committee. Surviving are his wife, Velna Reynolds Worth of the home; a daughter, Susan Porter and husband, Wiley, of Winston-Salem; a son, John Gregory Worth of Mount Airy; a granddaughter, Amanda Porter of Lincolnton; three grandsons, Shane Worth and wife, Donna, of Mount Airy, John Porter and wife, Joanna, of Carrboro, and Chance Worth of Cleburne, TX; two great-grandchildren, Brittany Worth and Amanda Worth, both of Mount Airy; a sister, Ruth Briggs of Mount Airy; and a brother, Merrill Worth of Mount Airy. In addition to his parents, Mr. Worth was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Blackmon; and two brothers, an infant brother and George Worth. The funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, April 29, 2009, at Mount Airy Friends Meeting, with Dr. Jon Cawley officiating. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, where his body will remain until carried to the church to lie-in-state 30 minutes prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Mount Airy Friends Meeting, 109 West Wilson Street, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
