Johnny Joe Sawyers

Mr. Johnny Joe Sawyers, 77, of Ararat, passed away Tuesday afternoon, November 20, 2018, at his home.  Mr. Sawyers was born June 28, 1941, in Surry County, one of five sons born to the late Joseph Glenn and Ethel Irene Johnson Sawyers.  Johnny worked as a tobacco farmer for many years, and he later worked for Surry County Public Works.  He faithfully attended Blackwater Community Church.  He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Geraldene Edwards Sawyers of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Gray Beverly of Mount Airy; a son, Timothy Sawyers of Ararat; his grandchildren, Jarred and Marinda Seal, Jonathan Seal, Ethan Seal, Emily and Dustin Stevens, Nathan Griffith, Harley Sawyers, Kustom Sawyers, and Aubree Akers; his great-grandchildren, Isabella Seal, Evan Seal, Jaxon Poliquin, Katie Seal, Lily Stevens, and Sage Poliquin; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Roger Danley and Sam Boles, both of Ararat.  In addition to his parents, Mr. Sawyers was preceded in death by four brothers, Rex Sawyers, Jimmy Sawyers, Willie Gray Sawyers, and Ricky Sawyers (infant).  The funeral service will be held Saturday, November 24, 2018, at 11:00 AM at Blackwater Community Church, with the Rev. Ted Crotts, the Rev. Gary Sawyers, Jarred Seal, and Allen Sawyers officiating.  Burial will follow in the Bryant Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery.  The family will receive friends Friday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Blackwater Community Church.  Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to the Winter Jubilee Fund at Blackwater Community Church, 112 Church Lane, Mount Airy, NC  27030.  Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
