Mr. Joseph H. (Joe) Horton age 81, husband of Lelia Simmons Horton, of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and formerly of Mount Airy died at the Kingston Nursing Center in Conway, South Carolina on Sunday January 7, 2007. Mr. Horton was born in Patrick County, VA December 21, 1925 the son of the late Marion and Covie Bowman Horton. Mr. Horton was retired from Skyline Motors of Mount Airy and later Patterson Automotive of Mount Airy after 35 years as an automobile salesman. He was a veteran of United States Army having served during World War II. Mr. Horton was a former member of Flat Rock Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon, and when he moved to the coast he moved his membership to Timberlake Baptist Church. Joe was known for his bright and positive smile during his stay at the Kingston Nursing Center. Surviving are his wife, Lelia Simmons Horton of the home; Two daughters and sons-in-law, Teresa and Mike Howell of Elkin, NC, and Lynn and Randy Manchester of Cana, VA; One son and daughter-in-law, Ken and Yvonne Horton of Mount Airy, NC; Six Grandchildren, Heather Suther and her husband Jon of Columbia, SC, Holly Howell of Greensboro; Joshua Horton and Amanda Horton both of Mount Airy; Travis Manchester of Mount Airy; and Barbie Andrejevs and her husband Alex of Kernersville, NC; his mother-in-law, Lolean Adams of Mount Airy and a special companion, his dog, Prissy Jo. In addition to his parents Mr. Horton was preceded by his first wife, Iris Horton, and 7 brothers and sisters. A memorial service will be held Wednesday January 10, 2007 at 3:00 at the Flat Rock Baptist Church in Mount Airy with the service conducted by Dr. Joe Maye and Rev. Bob Taylor. A private entombment service will be held prior to the memorial service in Skyline Memory Gardens. The Horton family will receive friends at the Moody Funeral Home of Mount Airy on Tuesday night from 7 to 9 PM. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the American Red Cross 844 West Lake Drive Mount Airy, NC 27030 or the charity of the donor's choice. Moody Funeral Service is serving the Horton family.
