Mr. Joseph C. “J.C.” Newsome of Friends Homes at Guilford, Greensboro, passed away early Thursday morning, October 20, 2016, leaving this world a little darker place. His birthplace was Mount Airy, where he was welcomed into the family of John and Cora Belle Childress Newsome. Other members of the family were Maxine Newsome, Verlie Newsome Combs and her husband, Walter D. Combs, and John Edwin Newsome. J.C. was known as one who was truly devoted to his family. He is survived by a cousin, Jo Ann Newsome Brintle of Mount Airy. J.C. attended public schools in Surry and Guilford counties. He graduated from Davis Bible College in Binghamton, NY, High Point University in High Point, and Appalachian State University in Boone. J.C. was dedicated to the cause of education and was well known in his own right as an outstanding educator. Altogether, he served 32 years in North Carolina’s public schools and colleges in the capacity of coach, teacher, and principal. In addition, he served on national committees for education and held life memberships in a number of national professional educational organizations. All his life, J.C. spoke with great pride of his contributions to education. J.C. was a longtime member of First Baptist Church in Mount Airy. He was interested in all the church’s activities and percolated in many of its programs, such as teaching a ladies’ Bible class and serving as a deacon for many years. Love for others was a notable charismatic trait of J.C. Newsome. He volunteered for many years of service with The Salvation Army of Mount Airy. He was awarded the plaque “OTHERS” given nationally by The Salvation Army for outstanding work by a volunteer. He served The Salvation Army for a total of 25 years as a volunteer. A graveside service will be held Sunday, October 23, 2016, at 3:00 PM at Salem United Methodist Church Cemetery, with Dr. Roger B. Gilbert officiating. No formal visitation will be held at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Salvation Army, P.O. Box 443, Mount Airy, NC 27030. J.C. Newsome will be greatly missed by all who knew him. The twinkle in his eye and his dapper attire were symbols of a shining spirit, which made us all stand up a little straighter. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
