Mr. Joseph Clarence Scales, 94, of Ararat, VA passed away November 5, 2021, at Northern Regional Hospital in Mt. Airy. He was born in Patrick County on March 13, 1927, to the late Samuel Dalton and Lena Blanche Boyles Scales. Mr. Scales retired from Proctor Silex after 30 years of employment and was a member of Victory Baptist Church. Joe served in the Navy, and was one of only two WW2 veterans alive in Patrick County. Joe was a loving father, grandfather and great grandfather who will be dearly missed. He is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra Scales Thompson, Glenda Pack and husband, Javier Martinez, Delman Hawks; grandchildren, Brandon Hawks, and Christopher Pack; a great grandchild, Gracie Jolynn Pack; sisters, Marion Isley, and Nancy Staples; sisters-in-law, Doris Scales, and Peggy Scales; a special nephew, Phillip Scales; many other nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Scales was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Ayers Scales; brothers, Percy Ollie “Sonny” Scales, Robert Franklin “Bobby” Scales, Samuel “Sammy” Scales; brothers-in-law, Elwood “Red” Isley, and Glenn Staples. A graveside service will be held Tuesday, November 9, 2021, at 2:00 PM at Salem United Methodist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Joey Jessup officiating and full military honors conducted by VFW Memorial Honor Guard Post 2019 of Mt. Airy and Post 9436 of Pilot Mountain. There will not be a formal visitation at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Scales family to help with expenses. The family would like to give a special thank you to all the many sitters for their love and kindness given to Joe for the past six year. Moody Funeral Home in Mt. Airy is serving the Scales family.
