Judith Andrea Needham Gilley

After a brief illness, our loving mother, grandmother, and friend, Judith Andrea "Judy" Needham Gilley, of Pilot Mountain, passed away Tuesday, March 1, 2011, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born April 12, 1938, in Guilford County, to Foster Andrew and Ophelia Wilson Needham. Judith was a graduate of The Woman's College of the University of North Carolina (now UNC at Greensboro) and was a longtime social worker and Social Work Supervisor in Miami-Dade County, FL, and in Forsyth and Surry counties. She served on the Surry County Home Health Advisory Board and was a faithful member of New Hope United Methodist Church. She was a trustee of the church and a former secretary for the New Hope Methodist Charge. She married John Cecil Gilley on November 8, 1964. Judith volunteered for YVEDDI, serving as a board member and as a Meals-On-Wheels volunteer. She was an avid sports fan and loved watching "her" Duke Blue Devils and Atlanta Braves. She never missed a middle school, high school, or college event that her children or grandchildren participated in. Growing up on an Alamance County farm fostered her love for animals. Her four kitties were precious to her. She also loved to garden and work in her yard. She was a quiet, unassuming lady and was a source of strength for her family. Predeceased by her husband and parents, she is survived by a son, Junior Cecil Gilley; a daughter and son-in-law, Rachel Gilley Collins and Stephen; a special grandson, Jeremy Gilley; and a special step-grandson, Huston Collins all of Pilot Mountain. Also surviving are two brothers, Daniel Andrew Needham of Graham and William J. "Bill" Needham and his wife, Helen, of Haw River. She also is survived by two special aunts, Lillie Needham of Greensboro and Katie Lee Wilson of Washington. The funeral service will be held at 6:00 PM Saturday, March 5, 2011, at The First United Methodist Church of Pilot Mountain, conducted by the Rev. Ted Turman and the Rev. Stephen Collins. A committal service will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday, March 6, 2011, in the New Hope United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends following at the First United Methodist Church, and other times at the home of Rachel Collins, 304 West Main Street, Pilot Mountain. Mrs. Gilley will lie-in-state one hour prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the New Hope United Methodist Church, c/o Britta Needham, 442 Armstrong Road, Pilot Mountain, NC 27041; YVEDDI, ATTN: Meals-On-Wheels, P.O. Box 309, Boonville, NC; or the Derrick L. Davis Forsyth Regional Cancer Center, 3333 Silas Creek Parkway, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
