J.W. Williams

Mr. J.W. Williams, 78, of Mount Airy, passed away Wednesday, November 21, 2018, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson.  He was born December 24, 1939, in Surry County, to the late Raleigh and Daisy Sutphin Williams.  Mr. Williams retired from the North Carolina Department of Transportation after 30 years of service.  In his youth, Mr. Williams was an exceptional basketball player for Beulah High School and was known as having an excellent jump shot.  Throughout his life, he had many hobbies, including golf, playing bass guitar, singing music with his family and friends, restoring 1959 Ford Galaxies, watching Duke Blue Devils Basketball, and gardening.  For over 40 years, he also was an active member of Ivy Green Baptist Church, where his wife Donna played piano and he sang in the choir.  Left to cherish his memories are his adoring wife of 54 years, Donna Collins Williams; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Mike and Rita Renee Williams, Mitch and Christy Williams, and John Michael Williams; three grandchildren, Raleigh Williams, Charlotte Williams, and Alexis Bowen; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary and Bobby Yarboro, Nancy and the Rev. John Kinder, Pam and Tony Shinault, and Terry Williams; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Paul and Judy Williams and Roger “Spud” Williams; his special neighbors, Wayne, Lou, and Sandra East; as well as many nieces and nephews, who he loved very much.  In addition to his parents, Mr. Williams was preceded in death by two sisters, Norma “Tootie” Martin and Carolyn Delaine Williams.  The funeral service will be held Saturday, November 24, 2018, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Robert McCrary, the Rev. John Kinder, and the Rev. Tony Holder officiating.  Burial will follow in the Ivy Green Baptist Church Cemetery.  The family will receive friends Saturday from 12:00 until 2:00 PM at the funeral home.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home, 945 Zephyr Road, Dobson, NC  27017.
