Kenneth Olson Harris, Sr

Mr. Kenneth Olson Harris, Sr., 78, of Mount Airy, passed away Tuesday evening, January 17, 2017, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Mr. Harris was born November 20, 1938, in Surry County, to the late John Edgar and Lorena Caroline Holbrook Harris. Kenneth proudly served our country in the United States Army, and he retired as the district circulation manager from Winston-Salem Journal. He attended Calvary Baptist Church and was a member of Double Creek Church of Christ. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Rachel Martin Harris of the home; two daughters and a son-in-law, Jennifer Harris of Clemmons and Jodi and John Cox of Mount Airy; two sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth Olson Harris, Jr. and Lisa Harris of Dobson and the Rev. John Kevin and Amy Harris of King; his grandchildren, Matthew and Brittany Harris, Luke Harris, Samuel and Meagan Harris, Abby Harris, Jacob Harris, Jonathan Harris, Ian Cox, Reese Cox, and Eli Cox; a sister-in-law, Lois Harris of Jonesville; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Harris was preceded in death by two sisters, Opal Lee Watkins and Louise Adams; and three brothers, E.L. Harris, Orman Harris, and Ben Harris. The funeral service will be held Friday, January 20, 2017, at 11:00 AM at Calvary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Alex L. Martin and the Rev. John Kevin Harris officiating. Burial will follow in the Double Creek Church of Christ Cemetery, with military honors by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, where his body will remain until carried to the church to lie-in-state 30 minutes before the funeral service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Reeves Community Center Foundation, 113 South Renfro Street, Mount Airy, NC 27030, to assist with scholarships for underprivileged children to play sports.
