Mr. Kent Samuel Gibson, Sr., 89, of Mount Airy, passed away Thursday, June 2, 2011, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mr. Gibson was born November 7, 1921, in Surry County, the son of the late John Gibson and Annie Myers Gibson Spicer. He honorably served our country in the United States Navy during World War II and in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross Medal as well as several other service medals. Mr. Gibson was a member of the American Legion Post 123 of Mount Airy and a member of the Elks Lodge. He retired from Duke Energy Company after 34 years of service. Mr. Gibson was a devoted fan of the Atlanta Braves and he loved his Carolina Tarheels. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, who will be dearly missed by all his family and many friends. Surviving are his loving wife, Mary Lou Cook Gibson of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Diane and Ricky Hicks of Ararat and Laura and Rick Brintle of Mount Airy; a son and daughter-in-law, Kent Gibson, Jr. and Sharron Gibson of Raleigh; granddaughters, Susan Jones and her husband, Kevin, of King, Meg Gibson and Sarah Gibson, both of Raleigh, and Maleigha Brintle of Mount Airy; two grandsons, Justin Gibson of Raleigh and Chase Brintle of Mount Airy; a great-grandson, Taylor Jones; and a great-granddaughter, Peyton Jones. In addition to his parents, Mr. Gibson was preceded in death by a daughter, Wendy Pappas; a grandson, David Hicks; and a sister, Audrey Slate. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, June 4, 2011, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Ray Hannah officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Disabled American Veterans, 767 West Lebanon Street, Mount Airy, NC 27030; or to a charity of the donor's choice.
