L Sam Dockery Jr., 93, passed away on June 19, 2021 in Winston-Salem, NC. He was preceded in death by his parents Luther S Dockery and Tommie B. Dockery, his wife Carylon Billings Dockery, his sister Lillian Kimmel, and brothers Martin, James, and Kenny Dockery. He is survived by his children Sam III (Cynthia) Dockery; Cary (George) McGregor; Celeste (Taber) Chadwick III; and Dr. Stephen (Marci) Dockery; grandchildren Elizabeth Wright, Kelly Whitehart, Gorden McGregor, Lauren McGregor, Sarah McGregor, and Taber Chadwick IV, and great-grandchildren Kyleigh Wright, Trenton Wright, Graham Whitehart, and Harper Whitehart. He is also survived by his sister Patricia Manuel and many nieces and nephews. Sam proudly served in the U.S. Navy from 1946-1948. He graduated from High Point College in 1952 with a degree in Biology, and received his Masters of Education from UNC Chapel Hill in 1955. Sam was a doctoral candidate at Duke University where he pursued his lifelong passion in Botany. In 1952, Sam began his career in education serving as a principal in Surry, Stokes, and Guilford Counties, notably at Northeast Senior High School in McLeansville where he worked for 17 ½ years. During their lifetimes, Sam and Carylon Dockery strove to instill a love of learning in their children and students. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home of Winston-Salem, NC. A private burial is planned.
