Mr. Larry Willard Mills, 69, of 214 Mills Road, Mount Airy, passed away Friday afternoon, February 3, 2012, at his home. Mr. Mills was born January 26, 1943, in Surry County, the son of the late Robert Cecil and Helen Willard Mills. Larry retired as a detention officer from the Surry County Sheriff's Department and attended The Peoples Church. He and his late son, Larry Ray Mills, worked as wallpaper contractors for many years. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Alice Simmons Mills of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Vickie and Ronnie Reeves of Mount Airy; four grandchildren, Justin Reeves, Crissy Mills, Janet Mills, and Robin Mills, all of Mount Airy; two great-grandchildren, Jordyn Ransdell and David Ray Ransdell, both of Mount Airy; a brother-in-law, Tom Marshall of Mount Airy; his mother-in-law, Lolean Wilson Adams of Mount Airy; and his special buddy, Rufus. In addition to his parents, Mr. Mills was preceded in death by a son, Larry Ray Mills; and a sister, Linda Mills Marshall. The funeral service will be held Monday, February 6, 2012, at 11:00 AM at The Peoples Church, with the Rev. Eugene Brinkley officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, where his body will remain until carried to the church to lie-in-state 30 minutes prior to the funeral service. The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the ICU staff at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital and the staff of Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care for their compassionate care and love during Larry's sickness.
