Mr. Larry Sherman Smith, also known as Larry Edmond Carpenter, 67, of Mount Airy, passed away Tuesday night, February 28, 2017, at his home. Mr. Smith was born January 18, 1950, in Galax, VA, the son of the late Aldie W. Carpenter and Edith Young Carpenter Reavis. Larry retired from Cross Creek Apparel after 40 years of service and was a member of Granite Masonic Lodge #322 AF and AM. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Peggy Melton Smith of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Bernice and Michael Johnson of Mount Airy; two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Michelle Smith of Dobson and James and Mitzi Smith of Mount Airy; his grandchildren, Melinda Johnson, Brittany Johnson, Levi Johnson, Katie and Jameson Ross, Haylee Smith, Katelyn Jones, Emily Smith, Ethan Smith, and Logan Smith; five brothers and four sisters-in-law, Greg and Shirley Carpenter, Dale Carpenter, and Dean and Cindy Carpenter, all of Mount Airy, Edward Leon and Linda Reavis of Hillsville, VA, and Harold and Ann Carpenter of Sebastian, FL; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Smith was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Beasley. The funeral service will be held Friday, March 3, 2017, at 2:00 PM at Laurel Springs Baptist Church, with the Rev. David Turner officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, with full Masonic rites conducted by Granite Masonic Lodge #322 AF and AM. The family will receive friends Friday from noon until 2:00 PM at Laurel Springs Baptist Church. The family wishes to express their gratitude for the love and compassion shown by the staff at Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, especially Bonnie Boles and Melissa Allen. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to Moody Funeral Services, P.O. Box 1288, Mount Airy, NC 27030, to assist the family with the funeral expenses. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
