Laura Jean Shealy Hudson, affectionately known as "Mema" to her family and "Big Red" to her friends and colleagues, passed away with grace, peacefully in her sleep at the age of 78. Born on July 28, 1946, in Fulton County, Georgia, Laura lived a life full of love, strength, and resilience. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, great- grandmother, and cherished friend. A hospitality professional at heart, Laura worked for many years at the prestigious Commerce Club in Atlanta, GA, where she gained the respect and admiration of all who knew her. It was there that she met her lifelong best friend, Janice Stowe, with whom she shared more than 50 years of unforgettable memories, laughter, and love. After retiring, Laura moved to be closer to her son, Anthony, daughter-in-law, Melissa, and her four grandchildren, who were the light of her life. Her grandchildren brought her immeasurable joy, and she adored them deeply. Whether it was attending their school field trips, spoiling them with sweets and gifts, or simply spending time together, Mema's presence was a constant source of comfort and warmth in their lives. Laura was an independent woman with a strong and unwavering spirit. Known for her quick wit, tough-as-nails personality, and boldness, she was loved for always being her true self. Her love for bold jewelry and flashy fashion was as much a part of her as her resilience in facing life’s challenges. Laura’s “never back down” attitude inspired those around her to live boldly and confidently - a lesson her son and grandchildren have always held on to. She is preceded in death by her parents, Ralph Shealy and Margaret Menendez, daughter, Cheryl Faye Elliott, and many beloved family members. She is survived by her son, Anthony McMillian and Daughter-in-law, Melissa; her grandchildren, Meagan Raccuia (Chris), AJ McMillian, Annber Gravley (Ryan), Mack McMillian (Sierra); three great-grandchildren: Emma Raccuia, Mila Raccuia, Luke McMillian and two great-grandsons on the way, along with a host of dear friends and extended family who will forever hold her memory close. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at 2:00 in the afternoon at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy. Reverend Terry Watson will officiate the service. The family will receive friends from 12:00 until 2:00 at the funeral home. Laura will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her legacy of courage, grace and love will live on in the hearts of those she leaves behind. Rest in peace, Mema – you were truly one of a kind.
