Mr. Lawrence Hampton Flippen, 73, of 3658 Pine Ridge Road, Lowgap, passed away Sunday morning, February 1, 2009, at his home. He was born March 21, 1935, in Surry County, to the late Grover Lee and Edna Pearl Flippen. He retired from Proctor-Silex Inc. Mr. Flippen was a member of Central View Baptist Church and a member of the Beulah Ruritan Club. Surviving are his wife, Peggy Cave Flippen of the home; two daughters, Phyllis Arrington of Mount Airy and Elizabeth Flippen of Lowgap; a son and daughter-in-law, John Wayne and Tena Flippen of Pilot Mountain; nine grandchildren; a great-grandchild; a sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Roger Cooke of Dobson; and three brothers and two sisters-in-law, James Monroe and Ruth Flippen of Fancy Gap, VA, and Harold Lee and Edith Flippen and Clarence Ray Flippen, all of Mount Airy. In addition to his parents, Mr. Flippen was preceded in death by a son, Ricky Flippen; and a granddaughter, Mary Ann Flippen. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, February 3, 2009, at 2:00 PM at Blue Ridge Baptist Church, with the Rev. Bill Spurlin and Rev. Craig Key officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, where his body will remain until carried to the church to lie-in-state 30 minutes prior to the service. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
