Mr. Lee Charles Kegley, 96, of Mt. Airy, went to his heavenly home, Wednesday, November 24, 2021. He was born in Grayson County, VA, June 21, 1925, to the late Charlie Lee and Claudia Higgins Kegley. At age 18, Mr. Kegley joined and bravely served in the U.S. Army during WWII earning several commendations including Bronze Star Medal. He continued to show his patriotism by working with the Grover King Post VFW in Hillsville where he served as a life member and a past Commander. Early in his career, Mr. Kegley worked at Southern States in Hillsville and was instrumental in the design and building of the current building. He later started to work with Sears & Roebuck and retired after many years of service. He was a devoted Christian, serving as a board member and assistant Sunday School teacher for First United Methodist Church in Hillsville. He started the Boy Scout Troop in Hillsville and volunteered as a troop leader for years. Mr. Kegley was once voted “Citizen of the Week” by the Carroll News. He and his first wife enjoyed square dancing and were involved with a group of fellow dancers that appeared on TV. Left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Patsy Kegley Dalton, Trenna Kegley Fields; a step-daughter-in-law, Pat Stewart; three grandchildren; four step grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; six step great grandchildren; a sister, Nannie Rose Jones; brothers and sisters-in-law, Earl M. and Joyce Kegley, and Kyle and Emmalene Kegley. In addition to his parents, Mr. Kegley was preceded in death by his first wife, Imogene Carrico Kegley; his second wife, Gertrude Frances Dickens Kegley; sons, Dennis K. Kegley, and Donald Lee Kegley; son-in-law, Steve Fields; a stepson, Greg Stewart; sisters, Nell Miller, Lotus Burnette, and brothers, Ray and Fred Kegley. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Monday, November 29, 2021, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. David Payne officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Vale United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday from 1:00 PM until the time of the service. Flowers will be appreciated, or memorial contributions may be made to the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home, 945 Zephyr Rd., Dobson, 27017, or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
