Mr. Lee Roy Palmer, 74, of Cana, VA passed away Sunday, January 18, 2009, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. Mr. Palmer was born October 6, 1934, in Patrick County, VA, to Eva Handy Palmer and the late John Preston Palmer. He worked many years for Kerns Bakery and retired from Kentucky Derby Hosiery. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather and a member of the Kingdom Hall. Mr. Palmer is survived by his wife, Dorsie Tate Leonard Palmer of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Sam B. Ashburn of Pilot Mountain; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ricky and Leslie Palmer of Pilot Mountain and John and Martha Palmer of Mount Airy; grandchildren and spouses, Brandon and Angie Palmer of Dobson, Samuel and Sheila Ashburn of Ararat, VA, Chris and Sendy Ashburn of Lexington, Wesley Palmer and Cody Palmer, both of Mount Airy, and Cassidy Leonard and Chris Leonard, both of Cana, VA; great-grandchildren, Savannah Ashburn, Kristian Ashburn, and Shealin Ashburn; his mother, Eva Handy Palmer; and three sisters and a brother-in-law, Wavey Mabry of Mount Airy, Edith Boyd Thomas and Rubin of Mount Airy, and Mary Palmer Cox of Dry Pond, VA. In addition to his father, Mr. Palmer was preceded in death by a stepson, Van Leonard; a sister, Ruth Beasley; and the mother of his children, Mary Frances Palmer Furgeson. A memorial service will be conducted Saturday, January 24, 2009 at 2:00 PM at the Kingdom Hall in Mount Airy by Minister Kim Kimmell. The family will receive friends after the service at the church, and other times at his home.
