Mrs. Leila Harriet Gibert Voris of 125 Locklear St. Mt. Airy passed away at Northern Hospital of Surry County on Saturday March 1, 2008. Mrs. Voris was born October 10, 1921 in the Lebanon Section in Abbeville County, SC. to the late Jane Waters and John Baskin Gibert. She graduated from Montreat College and Furman University. She retired from the Surry County School System after 24 years teaching there. She also taught 10 former years in other S.C. and N.C. schools. She wrote poetry for a hobby, many of which were published and given awards. She was descended from a famous French Hugenot family, Jean Louis Gibert and Pierre Gibert who came to America in the 1700's and were governors of a large western S.C. colony before the Revolutionary War for U.S. Freedom. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was of the Presbyterian Faith. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law Anne Michele and Clay Junior Forrest and Sydney Jean and Robert Ferris of Mt. Airy, seven grandchildren, Melanie (Forrest) and husband Jason Bodenhamer, Mark Forrest, Nathan and wife Charlotte Hiatt, Pete Hiatt, Steven Hiatt, Allison (Hiatt) and her husband Joseph Puckett and Andre' Vernon as well as nine great grandchildren Lee Bodenhamer, Hannah and Zachary Forrest, Beau (B.J.), Dakota and Peyton Hiatt and Brantley, Elijah and Ezra Vernon. She is also survived by one brother Albert Pierre Gibert of Mt. Airy and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband Cleo M. Voris, she was preceded in death by beloved grandfather James Stephen Gibert, two brothers John and James Gibert, two sisters Mary Mitchell and infant Margaret Gibert and infant twin grandchildren Jennifer and Jasen Hiatt. The family will receive friends 7 to 9 P.M. at Moody Funeral Home on Monday March 3, 2008. Funeral services will be held at Moody Funeral Home Chapel on Tuesday March 4, 2008 at 2:00 P.M. with services conducted by Dr. Steve Lindsley with burial to follow at Skyline Memory Gardens. Flowers will be accepted or please send donations to the First Presbyterian Church of Mt. Airy or Calvary Baptist Church in Mt. Airy.
