Mrs. Lelia Simmons Horton, 74, of Myrtle Beach, SC, formerly of Mount Airy, passed away Saturday, April 10, 2010. She was born July 20, 1935, in Surry County, to Lolean Wilson Simmons Adams and the late Roy Johnny Simmons. She was a faithful employee of Quality Mills for 25 years. After retiring, she worked for her son-in-law at Hydraulic Service Center and Aladdin's Lamp. Mrs. Horton was a bookkeeper for hospice when all positions were volunteer. She was a dedicated member, Sunday school teacher, and treasurer at Flat Rock Baptist Church and later a member and treasurer at Timberlake Baptist Church in Myrtle Beach, SC. She loved life and sharing it with her family and friends. She enjoyed playing cards, Bible study, the beach, Red Hat Ladies, crafts and animals, especially dogs. Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Lynn Simmons Manchester and Randy and Teresa Howell and Mike; a son and daughter-in-law, Ken Horton and Yvonne; six grandchildren, Eric Travis Manchester, Barbi Teneil Manchester, Joshua Horton, Amanda Horton, Heather and Jonathan Suther, Holly and Iain Hadgraft; a great-grandson, Corbin Gabe Manchester; her mother, Lolean Wilson Simmons Adams of Mount Airy; a sister and brother-in-law, Alice Mae and Larry Mills of Mount Airy; several nieces; and many children who became her "adopted kids" from Sunday school and others who adopted her as their "Mimmie". In addition to her father, Mrs. Horton was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Henderson Horton; and first husband, James Douglas Simmons; her maternal grandparents, Daisy and Zeb Wilson; her paternal grandparents, Lottie and Isom Simmons; and a nephew, Larry Mills. A memorial service will held at 3:00 PM Tuesday, April 13, 2010, at Flat Rock Baptist Church, with the Rev. Bob Taylor officiating. A private entombment service will be held prior to the memorial service at Skyline Memory Gardens Mausoleum. The family will receive friends Monday from 6:00 to 8:00 at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to the Lupus Foundation of America, 200 L Street, NW, Suite 710, Washington, DC 20036 in honor of her grandaughter, Barbi T. Manchester.
