Mrs. Leona Ruth Amburn Hooker, 89, of 149 Glory Lane, Mount Airy, passed away Monday, July 20, 2009, at her home. She was born May 27, 1920, in Surry County, to the late William Jefferson and Lula Mae Gordon Amburn. She retired from Northern Hospital of Surry County and was of the Baptist faith. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Evelyne and the Rev. Lonnie Gunter of Mount Airy; a daughter-in-law, Margaret Hooker Layman of Mount Airy; three granddaughters and their husbands, Laura and Ricky Goins, Jill and Jimmy Nichols, and Stephanie and Rex Gregory, Jr., all of Mount Airy; a grandson and his wife, David Scott and Holly Gunter of Mount Airy; eight great-grandchildren, Morgan Nichols, Alex Nichols, Emma Nichols, Duke Gregory, Zacch Gregory, Andy Goins, Matthew Goins, and Jake Gunter; two sisters-in-law, Jean Bottomley Amburn of Pilot Mountain and Lois Poole of Mount Airy; and a special friend, Carol Lee Tilley of Mount Airy. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hooker was preceded in death by her husband, Claude France Hooker; a son, Claude Wayne Hooker; and a brother, the Rev. William Rawley Amburn. The funeral service will be held Thursday, July 23, 2009, at 2:00 PM at Genesis Full Gospel Church, with the Rev. Tom Slate and the Rev. Donnie Hooker officiating. Burial will follow in the Laurel Springs Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Genesis Full Gospel Church. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions can be made to Canaan Land Children's Home, 433 Sparger Road, Mount Airy, NC 27030, or to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
