Leonard Gilmer Hughes

         Mr. Leonard “Gilmer” Hughes, age 81 of Stuart, passed away Monday, April 6, 2020 at Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson, North Carolina.  He was born in Patrick County on January 17, 1939 to the late William Leonard and Missouri Handy Hughes.  In addition to his parents, Mr. Hughes was preceded in death by his wife, Beulah Adkins Harbour Hughes; a daughter, Eunice Harbour; and a grandson, Dale Wade.  He served in the United States Army and had retired as a mechanic with the Virginia Department of Transportation.  He was a longtime member of Community Primitive Baptist Church.  He loved to fish, hunt, and playing Rook with his buddies at Hardee’s.  He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother.

         Mr. Hughes is survived by his daughter, Linda Wade and husband, Waitman of Stuart; three grandchildren, Penny Winfree and husband, Lee, Randy Lawless and wife, Stephanie, Timothy Leonard Wade; five great-grandchildren, Jordan Dalton, Ashley Dalton, Morgan Lawless, Hunter Lawless and Seth Wade; one great-great-granddaughter, Allie; five brothers, Garland Hughes and wife, Essie of Patrick Springs, Melvin Hughes and wife, Elaine of Patrick Springs, Marvin Hughes and wife, Francis of Stuart, Alvin Hughes and wife, Jean of Stuart, and Donnie Hughes and wife, Linda of Stuart; one sister, Sylvia Smith and husband, James of Pelham, North Carolina; best friend, Violet Hubbard; and several nieces and nephews.

         A private graveside service will be held in the Community Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice, 18981 Jeb Stuart Hwy, Stuart, VA 24171 or to Community Primitive Baptist Church c/o Brenda Ayers, 735 Clark House Farm Rd, Stuart, VA 24171.  Online condolences may be sent by visiting www.moodyfuneralservices.com.
