Mr. Leonard Curtis "Shorty" Spurlin, 75, of 141 Holder Road, Mount Airy, passed away Monday, November 12, 2007, at his home. Mr. Spurlin was born November 18, 1931, in Alleghany County, to the late Leonard Edward and Wretha Jarvis Spurlin. He served our country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. "Shorty" was a charter member of the Pine Ridge Volunteer Fire Department, the owner and operator of Spurlin's Cabinet Shop, and a member of Bible Baptist Church. He was an avid motorcyclist and a talented musician with the Blue Ridge Entertainers, Smoky Valley Boys, and True Gospel Believers. He is survived by three daughters and a son-in-law, Jerry Blue Johnson of Mount Airy, Mary and Miles Collins of Winston-Salem, and Lois Marabillas of Mount Hope, WV; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Terril Lee and Monica Spurlin of Mount Airy and Gene Andrew Spurlin of Bacliff, TX; four grandchildren, Jessica Johnson of Chicago, IL, Shena Spurlin and Haley Spurlin, both of Mount Airy, and Jeffrey Collins of Winston-Salem; his stepmother, Thelma Grace Spurlin of Ennice; a sister, Lynda Spurlin Joyce of Sparta; a brother and sister-in-law, Lonnie David and Rhonda Spurlin of Apex; and special friends, James and Gelene McKnight of Lowgap. In addition to his parents, Mr. Spurlin was preceded in death by his wife, Vera Mae Collins Spurlin; and a brother, Larrie Walter Spurlin. The funeral service will be held Thursday, November 15, 2007, at 11:00 AM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Robert Farmer and the Rev. Woodrow Flippen. Burial will follow in the Holly Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Lambsburg, VA. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030, or Bible Baptist Church, c/o Mavis Williams, 145 Norval Lowe Road, Lowgap, NC 27024. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to "Shorty's" customers for their loyalty and kindness throughout the years.
