Mr. Leonard Lee Vass, 89, of 746 Rome Drive, Hillsville, VA, passed away at his home with family by his side on Sunday night, January 17, 2010. Mr. Vass was born April 27, 1920, in Carroll County, son of the late Daniel and Rebecca Fariss Vass. He served in the United Staes Army during World War II, serving in Normandy, Northern France, and Central Europe as a member of the signal corp. Mr. Vass was a lifetime member of the Grover King VFW Post 1115. He was a farmer and retired from the shipping department of Spencer's Inc. Mr. Vass was of the Baptist faith and served as pastor of Martin Church. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Icie Hawks Vass; a daughter and son-in-law, Kathryn and Layton Nolen of Fancy Gap, VA; a granddaughter and her spouse, Alison and Jason Payne of Cana, VA; a grandson, Bradley Nolen of Fancy Gap, VA; and a great-grandson, Brayden Payne. In addition to his parents, Mr. Vass was preceded in death by a sister, Stella Pruitt; and a brother, Herman Vass. The funeral service will be conducted Friday, January 22, 2010, at 2:00 PM at Rome Baptist Church, by the Rev. Clarence Marshall and the Rev. Rayton Puckett. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, with military honors by the Grover King VFW Post 1115. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6:00 until 9:00 at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy.
