Lincoln Lee Southern Jr. Ph.D., resident of Denham Springs, LA, passed away at his home surrounded by family and friends on May 27th, 2024. He was born in Surry County, North Carolina on April, 11th 1955 to Lincoln Lee Southern Sr., and Cassie Southern.
Dr. Southern, Professor Emeritus from the LSU Ag Center, was granted two US patents during his tenure in Animal Science at Louisiana State University, and was responsible for countless advancements within agriculture. He was a beacon of wisdom and inspiration to his students and colleagues alike. His contributions to the academic community at LSU were immeasurable, and his impact will be felt for generations to come.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Lee was a loving family man and steadfast friend. His kindness, generosity, and warm spirit touched the lives of all who knew him. His favorite things to do included working on his tractor, attending live music events with family and friends, watching all LSU sports, and hanging out in his workshop with his girls and the many visitors always welcomed to stop by. He will be deeply missed, but his legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of those he influenced.
He is survived by his loving wife Joan Stodghill Southern; brother-in-law John Stodghill; daughter Nicole Southern and husband Kevin; daughter Michelle Southern Plumlee and husband Daniel, grandsons Stephen "Henry" Crawford II and Jeffrey Plumlee; daughter Melissa Gobert Wiersema and grandchildren, Colby Wiersema and wife Morghan, Connor Wiersema, Cooper Wiersema and Courtney Wiersema; great grandson Wesley Wiersema; son Jason Gobert and wife Meadow, grandchildren Scout Gobert and Harlow Gobert; sister Lynn Norman and husband Kyle; niece Brittany Norman Narutowicz and husband Michael; sister Faye Wood; nephew Monnie Wood and wife Traci; nephew Wesley Wood and wife Ann; nephew Stan Southern and Kimberly; niece Chris Southern; niece Robin Bowles and husband Don; niece Dawn Wood and husband Ed; and numerous other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Gray Southern, and brother-in-law John Wood.
A party in Lee’s honor will be announced at a later date.
