Mrs. Lolar Virginia Galyean Thomas Marshall, 95, of the Pine Ridge community, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday morning, October 5, 2021, from Northern Regional Hospital. Mrs. Marshall was born April 5, 1926, in Carroll County, VA, one of twelve children born to the late Guy Franklin and Bertha Upchurch Galyean. Lolar was a very devoted and loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother. She was a wonderful cook and loved nothing more than cooking for family and friends. She also loved to sew quilts, crochet, and sing. Lolar worked in a knitting mill for many years and retired from Oakdale Knitting Company. Left to cherish her memories are her children, Janice and C.W. Newman of Dobson, the Rev. Arlis Thomas of Mount Airy, Glenda Carter of Denver, and Judy Fulda of Mount Airy; seventeen grandchildren; twenty-nine great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, James “Buck” Galyean of Lexington and Ronnie Wyatt of Mount Airy; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Marshall was preceded in death by her first husband, Harvey Lee Thomas; her second husband, Verlon Marshall; two sons, Roy Lee Thomas and Donald Marshall; five sisters, Barbara Cave, Mildred Patino, Fredna Puckett, Vera Bledsoe, and Frances Payne; and four brothers, Charlie Galyean, Joe Galyean, Haywood “Elwood” Galyean, and Pete Galyean. The funeral service will be held Sunday, October 10, 2021, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Arlis Thomas and Elder Arwood Edwards officiating. Burial will follow in the Zion Hill Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 12:30 until 2:00 PM at the funeral home. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to the Skilled Nursing Unit at Northern Regional Hospital, 830 Rockford Street, Mount Airy, NC 27030. Affectionately known as Granny, she touched so many people in the 95 years she had on earth and will be greatly missed. The family wishes to express their gratitude for the love, compassion, and care shown by the Skilled Nursing Unit staff at Northern Regional Hospital and the staff at Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care. Also, the family wishes to express their appreciation to family, friends, and neighbors for showing love and kindness, along with their visits, for many years.
